The Detroit Lakes Scholarship Foundation’s “Dollars for Scholars” recently presented scholarships to  Detroit Lakes High School Graduating Seniors.

Students were selected based on academic, extra-curricular, community involvement, work experience, and extenuating circumstances.    Some scholarships are specific, based on a students intended major or interest.  Applications go out in February to students and are due back in mid-March.  The Counseling Center then makes copies of the applications and removes any identifying information:  names, addresses, etc.  “This insures that students are chosen based upon their accomplishments and merit.  It gives everyone an equal opportunity to compete for scholarships,” said Doreen Richter, High School Counselor.

Shortly afterward, the selection committee gets to work.  “We are blessed to have so many wonderful businesses, organizations and individuals who give back to our students,” said Richter.  “It is always a fun evening, and provides students an opportunity to see just how supportive their community is. It is our hope that someday students will find a way to pay it forward.”
